Sacred Art holds a special place at St. Edmund’s Retreat.  The Stations of the Cross, which hang within its Chapel, are illuminations created by Jed Gibbons.  He has effectively taught medieval painting and manuscript illumination for more than ten years at Enders Island’s Sacred Art Institute.  Gibbons’ illuminations integrate Jesus’ final steps along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem with one’s walk by familiar scenes on Enders Island.  In doing so, Jesus’ past Way of the Cross offers us food for thought as we follow in his footsteps in our own time and space.  This presentation has two purposes: The first is to highlight the content of each illumination to better appreciate and apply it.  The second purpose is to engage the viewer in the devotional journey of the Way of the Cross that Gibbons’ representation uniquely offers.
