Anatomical Logic and the Poetry of Form

This is a five day introduction to the logic of human anatomy and how it has been abstracted by the Great Masters to form an artist grammar powerful enough to penetrate the depths of the human condition and to project this profound reality through extraordinary artistic manifestations like the “Pieta” of Michelangelo to the Vatican frescoes of Raphael.

Day 1: Explore the figure through drawing from life. Starting with one minute poses and gradually work our way up to longer poses while simultaneously alternating between musical, gestural and soulful emphasis and architectural, structural and corporal details.

Day 2: Analyze a drawing from the previous day using sheets of transparent paper to first pull out the bone structure as an artistic X-ray. Then with another transparent sheet of paper on top of this pull out the overlapping muscle structures while indicating the origin and insertion of each muscle group and color coding each complimentary muscle group with complementary colors so as to understand it’s functional logic as an artistic grammar.

Day 3: Sculpt the live figure in clay in the round.

Day 4: Analyze the sculpture from the previous day with 3D sculpted anatomical references which we will apply to our sculptures so as to understand this anatomical logic in three dimensional form.

Day 5: Apply the knowledge gained over the preceding days to the application of oil on panel paintings of the live model so as to understand how this knowledge can be practically applied to the painting medium.

After this week of intense anatomical and artistic exploration, the students will have a very good foundation of what can be achievable with further exploration in this direction and hopefully unleash potentials of true incarnate beauty that the world desperately needs to witness to give hope.

This week-long workshop’s studio time lasts five consecutive days and begins Sunday night at 5:30 pm with a dinner for students and instructors. Dinner is followed by a workshop introduction and conference which ends at 9:00 pm. Hands-on instruction begins early Monday morning. The entire workshop ends Friday at 1 PM.
