Our Lens on Life- A Guided Retreat

Our Lense on Life
An African proverb says: “We see life from where we stand” and the Jewish Talmud offers a similar observation: “We see life, not as it is, but as we are.” Jesus expresses concern because we see but don’t perceive and we hear but we don’t understand. If we did perceive and understand, we would turn – see life differently – and we would experience the healing promised by Isaiah 6:9–10.
Our spiritual lens has very practical consequences. Stephen R. Covey in “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change” makes this application: “Where we stand depends on where we sit. Each of us tends to think we see things as they are, that we are objective. But this is not the case. We see the world, not as it is, but as we are – or, as we are conditioned to see it. When we open our mouths to describe what we see, we in effect describe ourselves, our perceptions, our paradigms. When other people disagree with us, we immediately think something is wrong with them.”
This guided retreat will explore some of the lens through which we see life in order to appreciate other perspectives and how they might help us better understand the differences that often divide us.
