Reading Scripture from the Heart of the Church: A Lenten Journey
With Fr. Thomas F.X. Hoar, SSE and Joe Haley
February 18 - April 1, 2026
This Free Lenten course on Enders Island offers is a journey through Sacred Scripture, specifically designed for the season of Lent. Led by Fr. Tom Hoar and Joe Haley, the program utilizes Scott Hahn’s renowned teachings to help participants read the Bible from the “Heart of the Church.”
We will meet each Wednesday starting on February 18 ( Ash Wednesday) and concluding on, April 1st, from 7- 8 PM.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church offers a rich and detailed interpretation of Sacred Scripture. Through the lens of Church authority, this lesson focuses on how the Word became flesh and how the Holy Spirit is the primary author of not just the New Testament but of both the Old and the New.February 25, Session 2. Scripture According to Scripture:
What did Paul say about the New Covenant? Is the Eucharist just a symbol? More importantly, what does our Lord say himself? In this second lesson, we learn directly from Jesus about how to read Sacred Scripture.
March 4, Session 3. Lessons on the Road to Emmaus
In this lesson, we look at the grand story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. No other story in the New Testament captures what we mean by “reading Scripture from the heart of the Church.” Together with the disciples, we go on the journey and experience how the “stranger” opens up the Scriptures, and then how the Risen Savior is made known in the breaking of the Eucharistic bread.
March 11, Session 4. The Emmaus Pyramid: Economy
In the previous lesson, we considered the Emmaus paradigm. Now, we start to build the Emmaus Pyramid. This visualization rests upon the foundation of the divine economy: the plot, the story, the plan of God that unites all of Scripture.
March 18, Session 5. The Emmaus Pyramid: Typology
In lesson five, we continue the construction of the Emmaus Pyramid, moving from the base of the divine economy to typology. Here we discover exactly how the New was conceived in the Old and how the Old is fulfilled and revealed in the New.
March 25, Session 6. The Emmaus Pyramid: Mystagogy
In this lesson, we reach the height of the Emmaus Pyramid. Building on the foundation of the divine economy and the twofold division of typology, we now come to mystagogy. We examine the mystery of faith, the Pascal Mystery, the drama that unfolded before the disciples’ very eyes when Jesus took, blessed, broke, and gave them the Eucharistic bread.
April 1, Session 7. Cultivating Eucharistic Amazement
Exactly how is it that we understand the Eucharist? How did the transformation of the execution of Jesus at Calvary miraculously turn into the consummation of his own self-sacrificial offering? How did that sacrifice become the Blessed Sacrament? In lesson seven, we look at the Pascal Mystery—not just academically and theologically but personally, practically, and powerfully. We evaluate the entire scene of Easter Sunday, when we discover the resurrected body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ just like the disciples did at the table in Emmaus.
The evening will begin with a 20 minute instructional video followed by a guided discussion led by Fr Tom Hoar and Joe Haley.
