Charcoal and graphite portraits can very visibly capture the spirit and emotion of figures in a piece. This course’s goal is to explore how to capture the mind and heart of the viewer and lead them to contemplation through charcoal portraits. You will learn how to choose a subject matter that pulls in the viewer’s emotion, how to create an accurate sketch of a figure, the facial features and gestures that create evident emotions, and how to bring the portrait to life using different forms and techniques of charcoal and graphite.
This week-long workshop will include five consecutive days of studio time, beginning Sunday night at 5:30 PM with a dinner for students and instructors. Dinner will be followed by a workshop introduction and conference, which ends at 9:00 PM. Hands-on instruction begins early Monday morning, and the entire workshop will conclude on Friday at 1 PM.
