Sacred Oil Painting

Catholic devotional life is strongly influenced by the artwork that surrounds and sustains it. In this workshop, we will look at devotion to St. Joseph through the work of three artists from the Western Tradition, Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), Bartolome Estaban Murillo (1617-1682) and Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779). After exploring the theological and artistic development of the devotion, we will consider the context in which each of the artists worked, identifying where they continued or broke from tradition, and why.

In addition to learning about the artists, participants will also learn from the artists through the practice of creating a master copy. Choosing from one of the selected images, participants will learn drawing and transfer techniques, as well as the palette of the artist and concepts needed to complete an archival quality oil painting. Supplementing this week-long study will be readings from popes and the saints in reference to St. Joseph; deepening participants theological and artistic appreciation for the devotion.

This week-long workshop’s studio time lasts five consecutive days and begins Sunday night at 5:30 pm with a dinner for students and instructors. Dinner is followed by a workshop introduction and conference which ends at 9:00 pm. Hands-on instruction begins early Monday morning. The entire workshop ends Friday at 1 PM.
