Ann Schmalstieg- Barrett
Ann was encouraged in the visual arts at an early age; compiling her first portfolio when she was 11 yrs old for admittance to a performing arts middle school. Studying Art History at the University of Pittsburgh, her interest in art developed roots in the Western tradition and grew towards concepts that transcend the contemporary ethos.
Moving to California to earn her MFA in painting from Laguna College of Art and Design, Ann was inspired by the peculiarity of the Catholic faith in which she was raised. Investigating theology and its intersection with the lived experience, she initially completed a series of relic studies, which then led to an exploration of St. John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body.” Encountering the death of her husband in 2010 (KIA Afghanistan), her investigation became personal as she lived/expressed concepts surrounding mortality and sorrow from the Catholic perspective; culminating in her Requiem Series (2018).
Marrying again in 2020, Ann currently resides in Pittsburgh, PA. Working in both oil and encaustic, she is dedicated to creating images suitable to assist in prayer for public and private settings. Her work can be viewed at www.annschmalstieg.com.
