Fr. Thomas F.X. Hoar, SSE

Fr. Tom entered the Society of St. Edmund in June of 1971. He professed religious vows on August 22, 1972. He was a student at St. Michael’s College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. In 1977, he received his Masters of Divinity from the University of St. Michael’s College, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1978, he received a Master of Arts degree in Religion and Religious Education from Fordham University in Bronx, NY. In June, 1985 Fr. Tom received a PhD in Higher Education Administration from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. Fr. Tom was ordained to the priesthood on May 13, 1978. In 1980, Fr. Tom became a trustee of his alma mater, St. Michael’s College, andfrom 1985 until 1987, he served as the Vice President of Student Affairs at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN. In 1993, he finally arrived at St. Edmund’s Retreat in Mystic, CT where he continues to reside to this day. While here at St. Edmund’s Retreat, Father Tom has been our Retreat Director, Director of Development, Director of Enders Island and from 2003 to the present is the President of St. Edmund’s Retreat. Father Tom established the St. Michael’s Institute of Sacred Art and the St. Maximillian Kolbe Recovery Residence during his time here. He is Chaplain of the US Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT.
 
Father Tom received his Doctor of Philosophy in Humanities from the program in Culture and Technology at Salve Regina University, Newport, RI in May 2011. He received his first doctoral degree in 1987 from Michigan State University in Student Development Higher Education Administration. In 2015, Father Tom became a member of the Board of Advisors for the Collegiate Recovery Program at Texas Tech University.
